FOREWORD:
"To appreciate and comprehend a painting, it is necessary not only to look at it with attention, but to have some familiarity with its place in the history of art. A painting, after all, is not merely the product of its creator's imagination and skill. Painters throughout history have been influenced by earlier painters, as well as by the religious, political, economic, scientific, and social events of their times.
This book covers the artists whose works are landmarks in the history of painting. It is a short illustrated survey of a long story, beginning in the fourteenth century with Giotto and ending with Cezanne in the late nineteenth century. It includes descriptive records of the important periods during which these men have worked, biographical accounts of the artists themselves, and reproductions of many of their famous paintings. It is designed to act as a stimulant for those to whom the enjoyment and study of pictures is a brand new experience; and to enhance the pleasure and satisfy the curiosity of those who already have a casual acquaintance with art."
This beautiful art reference book is in good condition. There is a little bit of tanning to the first few pages, but none so much as to distract from the breathtaking artwork inside. There is an inscription of the previous owners name on the inside cover and a scuff on the back of the cloth hardcover.
Those are the only flaws to speak of. The pages and illustrations are vibrant and clear of markings.
This would make for an excellent table book or gift for any art lover!
